At approximately 20:40 on Thursday, January 26th, alarms sounded for the Goodwill and City of Newburgh Fire Departments for a working structure fire. The two departments rolled up on 319 Dupont Avenue to a one story wooden frame house with a heavy fire condition on the A and D sides of the home.
City of Newburgh Chief Dennis Carpenter sounded a second alarm, and the first responding crews went to work venting the roof and moving into the roaring blaze with charged hose lines. While the firefighters continued their attack moving forward and closer to the heavy fire condition, the electric lines directly over their heads were arcing, sparking, flaring and falling right next to them.
This dangerous situation was brought under control in about a half hour. The FAST Team from the Air Guard at Stewart ANG Base was on the fire ground, and mutual aid companies from the Dan Leghorn Engine Company and the Cronomer Valley Fire Department were called to standby.
Goodwill Chief Mike Decker reported that the occupants of the home all escaped the fire without major injury and were being tended to. The cause and origin investigation units arrived on scene and began their work.
